Abstract In the preceding chapters we have produced an account of the peasant economy in each country during the period of the coffee boom and its aftermath, and produced a detailed analysis of responses to the boom in Kenya. This chapter brings out some comparisons with Tanzania. Prior to the boom the two peasant economies had similar structures and had inherited many common features of ecology and culture. Yet these initially similar economies produced radically divergent outcomes during our period. This chapter attempts to draw out some of these divergences and discuss to what extent they are attributable to differences in economic policies.
