A Chichewa object DP with [N modifier] structure can be made discontinuousby displacing the noun to the left periphery and leaving the modifier postverbal(Mchombo 2006). Contra Branan & Davis (2022), I argue based on novel data thatthe whole DP moves, but only the leftmost noun is pronounced in the highest copy.This explains why a quantifier that appears to be stranded postverbally has oblig-atory wide scope over negation: It raises with the noun but is pronounced in situ.I propose that this follows from a requirement that the verb form a phonologicalphrase with its local complement. I also show that for the same reason, Chichewawh-objects surface in situ but show island effects, indicating that they undergomovement not reflected in surface word order.
