Adoption of Artificial Intelligence for Improved Access to Health Information Resources by Health Institution Libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria.

Abstract

In an age where timely and accurate health information is vital, libraries in health institutions play an increasingly critical role. With rapid advances in technology, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into library systems presents powerful opportunities to enhance the access, management, and delivery of essential health information. This study investigates the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for improved access to health information resources by health institution libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study was narrowed to librarians in Colleges of Health Sciences and Technology within the state, as these institutions play a central role in training health professionals and managing health-focused information resources. A descriptive survey research design was employed, with structured questionnaires used as the sole data collection instrument. The population comprised all professional librarians in accredited Colleges of Health Sciences and Technology in Kwara State. From this population, a sample of 42 was derived, using purposive sampling to ensure that only qualified and active library personnel with direct responsibilities in managing information resources were included. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (such as frequency counts and mean scores) and inferential statistics to examine the level of AI awareness, adoption, perceived benefits, and associated challenges. Findings revealed moderate awareness of AI among librarians but low levels of actual adoption. Major barriers identified included inadequate infrastructure, insufficient technical skills, and lack of institutional support. However, a statistically significant relationship was found between AI adoption and improved access to health information resources. The study recommends strategic investments in digital infrastructure, regular training for librarians, and supportive policy frameworks to enhance AI integration in health libraries.
