This Open Educational Resource (OER) provides comprehensive undergraduate-level learning material on David Diop's poem Africa, prescribed under Unit I – “Spirit of Freedom and Resistance” of Composite English, Semester III. The resource introduces learners to David Diop and the historical and literary background of the poem and provides an accessible discussion of its central idea, African identity, ancestral memory, colonial oppression, resistance, freedom and regeneration. Particular attention is given to imagery, symbolism, tone, poetic devices and the symbolic significance of the young tree. Designed primarily for undergraduate learners, the resource combines literary appreciation with examination-oriented learning. It includes a glossary, summary, revision points, learning outcomes and graded questions and answers suitable for very short answer, short answer and essay-level assessment. The material seeks to make African poetry accessible to learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds while encouraging critical reflection on freedom, human dignity, colonialism, cultural identity and resistance.
