This chapter will review the use and implementation of automated grading systems (i.e., AI grading) in South African higher education focusing on the exploration of whether it serves as a solution or a challenge. This chapter will explore this enquiry through the lens of socio-technical theory to understand the application of AI grading systems in higher education and how they serve the social and technical dimensions of the sector. This chapter calls for higher education institutions, educators, government, and other stakeholders to take part in the implementation of AI-based systems as they hold the potential to revolutionise how traditional methods were done before and now in the 21st century. This chapter argues that the role of technology in South African education is clear and that it will drive progress and prosperity, but it will be up to leaders to guide this transformation as much of the future potential for the education system is already achievable with the technology available today.
