The recording at the center of this item is an animal fable, created by a teenager. Fables are used in teaching the children about many things and how to behave in different situations. Elders like grandparents tell fables to children usually after supper. And after telling a story a second or third time, the grandfather/grandmother would ask the children to retell it. So, they are not just telling the stories, but they teach the children to learn them by heart. In Shilluk stories, rabbit is the most cunning character, jackal is stupid. Dinka consider the hyena (a similar animal) as clever. But in this short story, despite that jackal is clever, he was fooled by a small girl called Nyagul. Jackal believed that Nyagul could carry away the tree. This item consists of a recorded Shilluk narrative (wav file), accompanied with annotation (in Praat TextGrid) and associated information: metadata, permissions and speaker questionnaire. The associated information is also summarized, in a spreadsheet. The TextGrid annotation includes Shilluk orthography, translation, and comments.
