An Appraisal of the Application of Blockchain Technology for Improved Quality Learning: The Role of Funnel Model for E-Learning Implementation

The development of the Internet technology and online education has become a novel area of interest globally. However, this education mode still faces many problems in course credibility, credit and certificate certification, student privacy, and course sharing. Nonetheless, integration of blockchain technology is a promising trend in the development of online education. The block-chain technology can store learning records in a trusted, distributed manner, provide credible digital certificates, realize learning resource sharing with smart contract, and protect intellectual property through data encryption. Despite the credibility of the blockchain technology in the many sectors, there exists scanty information on how this technology can be utilized in delivering or securing learning materials so as to improve the quality of education materials delivered over the e-learning platforms. This conceptual paper discuss how blockchain technology model for online education can enhance quality of education and student learning. Specifically, the study is built on the implementation of Funnel e-learning model that encompasses material development and instructional design, governance and finance, technology and delivery. It is expected that the implementation of this model in Ahmadu Bello University distance learning and other distance learning institutions will help boost the quality of learning over the electronic learning platforms, which is in line with the sustainable development goals of Nigeria.
