AN EXPLORATION OF READING STRATEGY USE: WITH REGARD TO GRADE 11 STUDENTS OF KELLE SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT This study reports on an investigation on the method and attitudes of Ethiopian EFL learners towards An Exploration of Reading Strategy Use: with regard to grade 11 students of kelle secondary school. The objective of this study was to explore reading strategy use regarding to grade 11 English. The study was carried out based on descriptive research design and carried out on 50 secondary school grade 11 students taken as a sample of the study. The samples were selected in purposive sampling technique from the total 4 classes and 8 teachers were selected in availability sampling technique. The data were collected through questionnaire and structured interview. The questionnaire part was distributed to students and analyzed by statistical package of social science. But, the interview part was given to teachers and analyzed through tabulation and qualitative explanation. The results revealed that predicting is the most frequently used reading strategy and identifying logical implication is the least frequently used reading strategy. In addition, the research indicated that there was no significant mean difference among students attributed to gender. Finally, the research identified that students were in negative attitude towards reading strategy use. Hence, the findings shed some light on why and how to use reading strategies in EFL classes and provide some recommendations for students, teachers, and school leaders in order to create good teaching learning atmosphere in EFL classroom.
