This paper examined the economic impact of power supply instability on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, a critical sector that contributes approximately 48% to the nation's GDP and employs over 60% of the workforce. Through theoretical analysis grounded in institutional economics and development theory, this study explored how persistent electricity challenges create operational inefficiencies, increase production costs, reduce competitiveness, and constrain growth prospects for Nigerian SMEs. The research synthesized existing literature, employed economic modelling frameworks, and analysed the cascading effects of power instability on SME performance indicators including profitability, employment generation, and market sustainability. Findings revealed that power supply instability imposed a substantial "electricity tax" on SMEs, with businesses spending 20-40% of operational costs on alternative energy sources. The paper concludes with policy recommendations emphasizing infrastructural investment, regulatory reforms, and innovative financing mechanisms to address Nigeria's persistent electricity crisis and unlock the full potential of the SME sector.
