33rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2434-2439 In recent years, decreasing costs of solar PV have fuelled interest in the residential PV market. In contrast to North America and Europe which encourage grid-tie PV, in many African cities it is illegal to feed power back to the grid, and in the few cities where it is legal, the feed-in tariff is unattractive. The inability to feed excess energy back to the grid, coupled with grid instability and blackouts, has resulted in increased popularity of battery-based PV systems in African cities. However, homeowners embarking on this journey quickly discover that they are ill equipped to navigate the many options presented by suppliers. In this paper, we present a consumer-friendly app that empowers homeowners to design their own battery-based PV system. The app selects components from a live catalogue, which is based on the availability of equipment from nearby retailers, and optimises the system on price and performance. The app is accessible via a web app which can be viewed on a mobile, tablet, or desktop device.
