Application of the Azibo Nosology in Clinical Practice with Black Clients: A Case Study

Azibo (1989) has delineated a clinical syndrome nosology based on an African-centered analysis of Black personality. This article presents a case study of an African American male who came in,for a treatment (penile prosthesis device) he did not need. The cave readily illustrates the relevance of'African-centered thought to clinicalpractice, and an application oftheAzibo Nosology is described via this case. The utility of the nosology and limitations /f'using the nosology qf the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of'Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) are discussed. It is argued that the Azibo nosology ofjrrs a more comprehensive and appropriate method,for determining diagnoses in people of African descent because it is based on a culturally relevant standard of'normalcy in behavioral practice. In addition, it is argued that this improvement in diagnostic accuracy and relevance implicates a more comprehensive intervention approach than the DSM-IV nosology.
