Are We Ready For Online Teaching And Learning? Lecturers’ Perception at One State University in Zimbabwe

This study sought to examine how lecturers perceive the readiness of using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning by higher education institutions in Zimbabwe during the global outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The qualitative paradigm underpinned by the descriptive survey design was employed to provide an accurate description of the variables in the problem model. A sample of 30 participants was drawn from one purposively selected university. Online questionnaires and interviews were used for data collection due to restricted movement. The results indicated that, despite all the investments in ICT infrastructure, equipment and professional development to improve education globally, ICT readiness is a challenge in teaching and learning. This study revealed that individual, institutional and technological factors contributed to the use of technology during teaching and learning processes. The study concludes that for successful transition to e-learning, lecturers must perceive the technology as better than previous practice; consistent with their existing values, past experiences and needs; and ease to use. The study recommends that lecturers need to maintain a positive attitude towards the use of technology to easily provide useful insight into the advantages of embracing it in their teaching.
