International audience This study analyzes the use of artificial intelligence by undergraduate students at Thomas Sankara University. Based on a questionnaire administered to 657 students, it describes the types of AI tools used, the associated academic needs, and the motivations behind these practices. The results indicate that slightly more than half of the students use AI, mainly for information retrieval and text translation. Translation software and conversational AI tools are the most widely used. Gender does not significantly influence AI use, although differences appear across academic disciplines. The main motivations reported include improving academic performance, supporting learning activities, and saving time.
