ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF FLIPPED CLASSROOM APPROACH ON METALWORK AND BUILDING TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT IN LAGOS STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGES

This study investigates the effectiveness of the flipped classroom approach on students' academic
achievement in Metalwork and Building Technology within Government Technical Colleges in Lagos
State, Nigeria. Employing a quasi-experimental research design with pre-test and post-test measures, the
study utilized four intact classes across four technical colleges. The experimental group (n=150) from
Government Technical Colleges, Ikorodu and Ikeja, received instruction through the flipped classroom
method, while the control group (n=150) from Government Technical Colleges, Ado Soba and Ikotun,
was taught using traditional demonstration methods. Data were collected using the Metalwork and
Building Technology Achievement Test (MeBuTAT), a 20-item multiple-choice instrument validated
by three experts and demonstrating a reliability coefficient of 0.78 through test-retest methods. Research
questions were analyzed using mean and standard deviation, while hypotheses were tested at the 0.05
significance level using t-test analysis. The findings indicate a statistically significant difference in
academic achievement between groups, with the experimental group showing higher post-test mean
scores (36.37) compared to the control group (26.75). The calculated t-value was 38.48, compared to the
critical value of 1.96. These results suggest that the flipped classroom approach is associated with
improved learning outcomes relative to conventional demonstration methods. The study concludes by
recommending the systematic integration of flipped classroom pedagogy across technical college
curricula, alongside strategic investments in digital infrastructure and teacher professional development
programmes to support Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) delivery in Nigeria.
