Assessing the impact of Fake News on Educational Outcomes in Nigeria

Abstract: The proliferation of fake news has become a global concern, with significant implications for various sectors, including education. In Nigeria, where digital and social media platforms serve as primary sources of information for many, the spread of misinformation and disinformation poses a critical challenge to educational development. This study examined the extent to which fake news influences key educational variables, such as access to education, policy implementation, curriculum design, and its influence on the perception of teachers. students, and parents. Employing qualitative data from archival records, interviews, and existing secondary sources, the study explored how fake news exacerbates educational inequalities, disrupts learning processes, and fosters misinformation regarding educational reforms. It highlighted specific instances, such as false narratives about examination results, scholarship opportunities, and changes in curriculum content, which have led to confusion and misallocation of resources. Furthermore, the study discussed the psychological impact of fake news on students and teachers, including diminished trust in educational institutions. To mitigate these effects, the research emphasized the need for robust media literacy programs, stricter regulatory policies for online content, and enhanced fact-checking mechanisms. The findings underscored the urgency of addressing fake news to safeguard the integrity and progress of Nigeria's education system.
