Digital literacy is a core competency for the 21st century, yet many secondary school curricula remain limited to basic ICT training and neglect critical areas, such as on-line safety, ethics, critical thinking, and adaptability to emerging technologies. Meanwhile, Artificial Intelligence offers transformative opportunities for personalized learning, adaptive content delivery and real-time feedback. This study assessed the need to design an AI-driven curriculum framework to enhance digital literacy among secondary school students. A survey approach was adopted, involving 382 students along with structured interviews of 30 teachers and expert curriculum developers and educators. Results from SDLAIUQ revealed inadequate digital literacy instruction, with gaps in teacher preparedness, curriculum coverage, and infrastructure. Qualitative findings reinforced these concerns, but also highlighted the enthusiasm for AI’s potential, alongside issues of equity, ethics, and readiness. The study recommends for a revision of national and state curricula to embed digital literacy as a core competency, extending beyond ICT basics to include online safety, ethics, critical thinking, and responsible citizenship.
