Assimilation in Nafara: An Evidence of Language Universal

Abstract: Assimilation is a cross-linguistic phenomenon which operates differently moving from one language to the other. This article grounded and framed up with the lexical phonology theory analyses assimilation in Nafara. The study shows that assimilation in Nafara language can be in voicing, place and manner of articulation. The direction of the assimilation can be progressive, regressive and long-distance as well. The analysis has revealed that under certain circumstances deletion rule must apply before the assimilation process gets completed. Keywords: Phonology, Assimilation, Process, Rule, Application
