Asymmetric Labor Market Responses to External Demand Fluctuations: Evidence from Africa

This replication dataset accompanies the manuscript “Asymmetric Labor Market Responses to External Demand Fluctuations: Evidence from Africa.” It contains country-level panel data for 23 African economies and the Stata code used to construct the variables and reproduce the empirical analysis. The study examines asymmetric labor market responses to positive and negative external demand fluctuations. External demand conditions are constructed using country-specific export exposure to major international markets and the economic growth of key trading partners. The dataset includes labor market indicators covering employment status, labor force participation, unemployment, labor income, productivity, migration, exchange rates, inflation, terms of trade, and related macroeconomic variables. The replication code constructs the external demand shock, distinguishes positive and negative fluctuations, transforms the labor market outcomes, and implements the empirical estimations reported in the study. The underlying database covers 23 African countries over 1991–2023, while the main empirical analysis uses the 2001–2019 period according to data availability and the estimation design. This dataset contains the data and Stata code associated with the manuscript “Asymmetric Labor Market Responses to External Demand Fluctuations: Evidence from Africa.” The manuscript is currently unpublished.
