ATTITUDE OF LIBRARIANS TOWARDS APPLICATION OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY IN POLYTECHNIC LIBRARIES IN KOGI STATE, NIGERIA

This study examined the attitudes of librarians towards the application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in polytechnic libraries in Kogi State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was used, with data collected from 64 library staff across two polytechnic libraries: Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, and Federal Polytechnic, Idah. The study aimed to identify available ICT facilities, assess librarians' attitudes toward ICT use, examine the factors influencing these attitudes, and explore the challenges faced in ICT utilization. The data were analyzed using mean and frequency tables. The findings reveal that while both libraries have some ICT facilities such as computers, scanners, and printers, there are notable gaps in other areas, such as internet access, e-books, and smart card systems. Librarians generally exhibited positive attitudes towards the usefulness and ease of ICT tools, with perceived usefulness and ease of use being the highest-ranked factors. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, power outages, and lack of training were identified as significant barriers to effective ICT application. Factors influencing librarians' attitudes included ICT literacy, access to training, organizational support, and perceived usefulness of ICT tools. The study suggests strategies for enhancing ICT adoption, including increased funding, improved infrastructure, continuous training, and fostering positive attitudes through awareness campaigns. The study concludes that addressing the challenges and supporting librarians through adequate training and infrastructure will enhance ICT utilization in polytechnic libraries and improve service delivery.
