Automation and Labor Market Dynamics in Morocco: Evidence from Sectoral Employment and Wage Data

This study examines the effects of automation on the labor market in Morocco and explores the challenges and opportunities associated with the future of employment in an emerging economy. As technological change accelerates globally, automation is increasingly transforming production systems and skill requirements, raising important questions about employment resilience in developing countries.,The paper investigates the Moroccan context, where automation has expanded in key sectors including automotive manufacturing, aerospace, agri-food industries, and information technology. While technological adoption has enhanced productivity and competitiveness, it has also generated concerns regarding job displacement, skill mismatches, and labor market inequality.,The study uses information gathered from 60 experts in government and academia to apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA), which helps to find the key factors that shape how people view the effects of automation on jobs and how ready institutions. The results show that the measurement tools are reliable and consistent, and they highlight three key factors affecting job changes: the need for workers to learn new skills, how well the education system can adjust, and the support for new businesses and innovation.,The findings suggest that while automation presents significant opportunities for economic modernization in Morocco, its benefits will depend on proactive labor market policies and human capital investment. The study contributes to the literature on automation in developing economies by providing empirical evidence on institutional readiness and highlighting policy strategies for managing technological change while mitigating social and employment risks.
