Availability, Utilization and Challenges of School Health Services among Private Primary Schools in Abuja, Nigeria.

Background: School Health Services (SHS) are important for safeguarding the health and learning capacity of school-aged children. In Nigeria, implementation is inconsistent, particularly in private schools, where regulations vary.  Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the availability, utilization, and implementation challenges of SHS and to provide evidence-based recommendations to decision-makers and stakeholders to improve pupils' health and academic outcomes.  Method: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used, involving 160 respondents from 16 private primary schools, selected through multistage cluster sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: SHS awareness was 100% among respondents. At the school level, all schools provided first aid services, clean drinking water, and adequate toilet facilities. However, only 2 of 16 schools (12.5%) provided structured health education programs, 1 of 16 (6.3%) conducted immunization campaigns, and 2 of 16 (12.5%) had designated health personnel. Utilization was moderate, with 46.3% of respondents reporting occasional use and 22.5% reporting frequent use of available services. Lack of funding, poor infrastructure, and shortage of trained health personnel were the major challenges identified.  Conclusion: Infrastructure in FCT private schools is comparatively strong, but staffing gaps, limited-service scope, and weak community participation undermine effective SHS delivery. Addressing these gaps through sustainable funding, the recruitment of qualified health personnel, and stronger collaboration within the health education sector could substantially improve child health outcomes.
