BRICS Sustainable Development Index 2024

The relevance of the study is determined by the need for an objective assessment of the progress and contribution of the G5 members to the achievement of the SDGs, as well as the expansion of the membership of the association in 2024. Scientific novelty is determined by the lack of similar studies focusing on the BRICS countries, taking into account their national and collective priorities. The object of the study is the sustainable development policies of the BRICS countries. The purpose of the study is to assess the progress in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the BRICS countries in the period 2015-2024. The methods of content analysis, comparative analysis of key international indices, statistical analysis and expert assessment were used in the preparation of the work. The paper presents the results of analyzing the progress of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia) on 100 indicators in the field of sustainable development for 2015 and 2024. The study resulted in the creation of the BRICS 2024 Sustainable Development Index, which reflects the progress in the implementation and prioritization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) in the BRICS countries.

Conclusions. The analysis demonstrates a significant contribution of the BRICS countries to the global efforts to implement the SDGs. The most significant progress in the BRICS average is recorded in the environmental group indicators, as well as in digitalization and innovation. Given the significant contribution to global efforts, as well as the existence of common challenges, the BRICS countries can play a more active role in shaping the sustainable development agenda within the G20. Also, with the expansion of the BRICS membership from 2024, the importance of cooperation and exchange of experiences on sustainable development issues increases. The potential for interaction to address specific challenges faced by the population is also increasing.
