What happens when a well-designed research plan meets the realities of practical implementation? What do we learn when academic ideas and on-the-ground practice try to work together under pressure, with limited time and changing priorities? This piece reflects on these questions through our experience with a four-year, national disability and mental health programme that piloted District Mental Healthcare Plans (DMHPs) in three districts in Ghana.
