Chaha group

Abstract This chapter tackles the Chaha group, which consists of the Gurage varieties Chaha, Ezha, Gumer, and Gura. Labialization and palatalization abound across the Chaha group’s varieties both in lexicon and morphology. The depalatalization happens in the jussive base of verbs with palatal elements and weak verbs with final vocoid consonants I and U. Unlike Chaha, Gura, and Gumer, Ezha preserved gemination. Plural references of the language also manifest through pronominal means of verb agreement, possessive suffixes, and over pronouns.
