Chapter 3: Evaluating the triumphs and trials of the Ukonga Savings Mobilisation Programme

The Ukonga SMP, supported by the NMCF and KRCC, aims to bolster economic resilience and alleviate poverty among women in Eshowe. This chapter evaluates the successes and challenges of the SMP, focusing on its impact across various communities. In Nkanini, the SHGs have achieved significant economic independence and community improvement. They have established vegetable gardens, constructed infrastructure and launched entrepreneurial ventures, demonstrating how communal savings can enhance financial stability and social cohesion. However, they face challenges such as environmental issues, including crop destruction by monkeys, and the migration of youth, which impacts project sustainability. In Ntumeni, despite setbacks from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic period, SHGs have shown resilience through community support and diverse income-generating projects like poultry farming and vegetable cultivation. This adaptability reflects the strong community spirit. Yet, challenges persist, including limited resources, inadequate training and logistical issues, compounded by inconsistent support from project coordinators and funding constraints. KwaKhoza has experienced notable economic benefits from savings, including improved housing and local businesses. The groups’ increased monthly contributions and youth involvement are significant achievements. Nonetheless, they encounter issues such as mismanagement, internal conflict, poor bookkeeping and financial strain, which affect the group’s cohesion and effectiveness. Because of limited external support, Mombeni’s projects, including gardening and individual efforts, have yielded mixed results. The group’s successes and challenges highlight the need for better resource allocation and support on a multitude of researched and measured levels, especially from the South African national, provincial and district government municipalities. In summary, while communal savings programmes have provided financial security and social capital, the varying successes and challenges across communities underscore the need for ongoing support and adaptation.
