Circular Economy and Job Creation

This chapter examines how the circular economy (CE) can support green job creation in South Africa, where unemployment and unsustainable resource use remain major challenges. It presents the CE as a shift from linear production to a system focused on reducing waste, reusing materials, and regenerating natural resources. Through sectoral analysis, the chapter identifies employment opportunities in manufacturing, waste management, water reuse, construction, and renewable energy. It highlights the socioeconomic benefits of circular jobs, including improved skills, resilience, and social inclusion, while acknowledging barriers such as limited infrastructure, high investment costs, technological gaps, and low public awareness. The chapter concludes by outlining policy and business strategies that can expand CE-related employment and promote sustainable development in South Africa.
