On 6 June, Monica Estebanez Camarena, a researcher at TU Delft Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, presented the Schools and Satellites (SaS) project she lead from 2019 to 2021 and shared her perspective on Citizen Science during a pandemic. SaS project combined Earth observation, Citizen Science and Deep Learning for accurate rainfall information in Ghana. SaS worked with high schools and farmers in northern Ghana to create a Citizen Observatory of daily rainfall monitoring, that became the densest rainfall observation network in the region. While the value of Citizen Science became obvious during the project, there were also challenges that brought many learnings that Monica shared during this talk.
