Civil Society Interventions in Peace Education and Conflict Prevention in Nigeria

The place of civil society in mediating between the state and the citizens as well as relationship among the citizens in the conduct of their daily living is saliently important, particularly in fostering peace and preventing conflict in the society using several mechanisms. This study examined civil society interventions in peace education and conflict prevention in Nigeria, with a focus on identifying the strategies employed by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). The study was anchored on Conflict Trap Theory, which explained the persistence and recurrence of conflict due to structural, economic, and institutional factors. A qualitative descriptive research design was adopted, utilizing secondary data from books, journals, reports, and CSO documents these was complemented by interviews and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify key themes. The findings revealed that CSOs employed diverse peace education strategies such as school peace clubs, teacher training, youth engagement programmes, and community-based awareness initiatives to reshape attitudes toward non-violence. Additionally, conflict prevention strategies including early warning systems, interfaith mediation, election monitoring, community dialogues, and deradicalization programmes were widely implemented. These interventions were found to reduce tensions, enhance early response to conflicts, and promote peaceful coexistence, particularly in high-risk regions such as the Niger Delta area. The study concluded that CSOs played a critical role in breaking cycles of violence and preventing relapse into conflict by addressing both immediate triggers and underlying structural causes. Their grassroots approaches strengthened community resilience and fostered a culture of peace. However, their effectiveness was constrained by inadequate funding and limited institutional support. The study recommended stronger government-CSO collaboration, increased funding, and expansion of peace education and early warning initiatives to ensure sustainable conflict prevention.
