When Ferdinand de Saussure identified and expounded on semiotics in 1916, as the science of signs, little did he realize that he was romancing the heart of every language - sign. Interestingly, sign is culture-bound and language-specific. What is interesting is that the use and function of sign in every language can be very beautiful behold. Among the Yorùbá of West Africa, for example, Àrokò is unique among the many aspects of semiotics.
