Our research project aims to address the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Uganda by focusing on community health workers, specifically Village Health Teams (VHTs). By leveraging the available AMR surveillance data from the Vivli AMR Register, we aim to improve patient outcomes, strengthen stewardship, inform public health practice, and strengthen health systems in the following ways. Firstly, by assessing the knowledge of VHTs regarding AMR, we can identify knowledge gaps and design targeted training programs to equip them with accurate information on AMR. This will enhance their ability to educate and empower the community, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes. Through proper dissemination of AMR knowledge, community members can make informed decisions about antimicrobial use, reducing the risk of resistance and improving treatment efficacy. Secondly, our research will contribute to strengthening stewardship efforts. By training VHTs on responsible antimicrobial use and promoting appropriate prescribing practices, we can help curb the overuse and misuse of antimicrobials. This stewardship approach is crucial in preserving the effectiveness of existing antimicrobial agents and combating the emergence of resistant strains. Furthermore, our research findings will inform public health practice by providing insights into the prevailing patterns of antimicrobial resistance in Uganda. The analysis of AMR surveillance data will help identify trends, prevalent resistance patterns, and potential contributing factors. This information can guide the development of evidence-based policies, guidelines, and interventions aimed at controlling the spread of AMR at the community level. Lastly, our project seeks to strengthen health systems by integrating AMR training into the regular curriculum of VHTs. By incorporating this knowledge into their routine responsibilities, we ensure sustainability and long-term impact. Additionally, our collaboration with local health authorities, NGOs, and community-based organizations will facilitate the dissemination of AMR information and responsible antimicrobial use practices, ultimately strengthening the overall health system response to AMR. In conclusion, our research project utilizes the Vivli AMR Register data to empower VHTs with accurate AMR knowledge, leading to improved patient outcomes, strengthened stewardship, informed public health practice, and a more resilient health system. By addressing these key areas, we contribute to the global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and safeguard the effectiveness of antimicrobials for future generations.
