COOPERATIVE LEARNING AN EFFECTIVE TOOL IN INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE EDUCATION

This paper was designed to describe the use of cooperative learning as a methodology for effective teaching and learning process in indigenous language in Nigeria educational system. In view of this, cooperative learning as a successful teaching strategy in which students of different level of ability use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of indigenous language. Member of a team is responsible not only for learning of what was taught but also for helping teammate, learns, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. In carrying out this study, the use of questionnaire was adopted for the collection of data from the sampled population. The despondence was determined by using frequency table and was analyzed by chi-square. The study was summarized and concluded that teachers should allow opportunities for students to work alone and in cooperative with others.
