The Outer Circle varieties of English are well‐served by an array of corpora. From the early beginnings of the Kolhapur Corpus of Indian English in the 1980s, modelled after the Brown corpus family, and the East African component of the International Corpus of English in the 1990s, many national varieties of English in Africa and Asia are covered by general corpora today. These corpora are usually not of the same size as the Inner Circle corpora, but still enable meaningful research into these varieties. Apart from general corpora, there are specialised corpora of selected spoken and written English, learner Englishes, historical corpora and corpora of online data. Since 2010, very large corpora of newspaper writing and blogs and other internet sites have become available, allowing the investigation of phenomena of much lower frequency than earlier.
