Daily Humdrum and the Need of AR / VR for Human Beings

A lecture at Kenyatta University (Nairobi, Kenya) on the relationship between the mundane aspects of daily life and the necessity for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology for human beings followed the concept of Everyday Virtual and Augmented Reality (as outlined in the book by Simeone, Weyers, Bialkova and Lindeman (eds), 2023). The main aim was to present the current discourse of everyday aesthetics and its relation to AR / VR activities and artefacts. The lecture comprised the outline of everyday aesthetics (its genesis, history and basic features and applications). In the second part the lecture provided examples of AR/VR in use and addressed the benefits of AR and VR for our everyday lives, the extent of their current and potential future deployment and use, their user-friendliness, and the possibility of creating or updating aesthetically valuable moments through AR and VR with a primary aim to contribute to bring an answer to the question of whether AR and VR are necessary or important for human beings' everydayness.
