DETERMINANTS OF PARTICIPATION DURING THE FIRST 6 MONTHS AFTER STROKE IN BENIN

However, few studies have quantified the functional recovery of stroke patients in sub-Saharan Africa.Purpose: To investigate factors that are predictive of participation in the first 6 months after stroke.Methods: This is an observational study with evaluations at 1 month (T0), 3 months (T1), and 6 months (T2) after stroke. Correlational analyses and multivariate linear regressions were performed. Participants were stroke patients (N = 64); mean age ± standard deviation = 56.8 ± 12.6 years; 70% male, 52% right hemiparesis. Participants were evaluated with the Participation Measurement Scale (PM-Scale), ACTIVILIM-Stroke, Stroke Impairment Assessment Set (SIAS), 6-Minute Walk Test (6-MWT), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and modified Rankin Scale instruments.Results: Participation level increased form 40% at T0 to 45% at T1, and to 52% at T2. The ACTIVLIM-Stroke measure was the best predictor of participation at all three evaluation time points (0.63 ≤ r ≤ 0.82, p < 0.001). Depressiveness was the second best predictor at T0 and T1, and the third best at T2 (‒0.71 ≤ r ≤ ‒0.71, p < 0.001).
