As too few malaria-endemic populations benefit from accurate diagnosis prior to antimalarial drug treatment, we proposed to radically improve malaria case management using smartphone and computer vision technologies. Our mobile health technology is currently applied to automate microscopy-based diagnostics, a gold standard method for malaria parasite detection and quantification on thick blood smear slides. The basic concept of our technology is to adapt to a traditional microscope a smartphone equipped with an Android application dedicated to malaria parasite detection and quantification. Our product is composed of two parts, the universal smartphone/tablet adapter (1) and the smartphone android AI-based application (2). Local production for adapters using 3D printing technology is currently implemented in Yaounde in order to supply proximal health centers. Furthermore, in partnership with the KOICA CTS program, our application is undergoing (3) clinical evaluation in Cameroon.
