Past, present and future rhythm synchrony jams with creative cinematography, editing and sound design. A scientific premise is rhythm code transmission through muscle memory – the memory you use to drive a car or ride a bike – rather than by DNA or blood. As African rhythms resist colonialism, diasporic rhythms express resilience, solidarity and spirituality. An interactive dance-music map accompanies the film: unityatlantic.org  The film title Drum Calls | Body Recalls  reflects a scientific premise – rhythm code transmission through muscle memory, applying to social dance the well-established science of muscle memory or procedural memory (eg: Sacks 2007; Schorn and Knowlton 2022). Consistent with this thesis Drum Calls draws on dance imagery as primary source historical imagery of Black Atlantic life and as living culture. Acadamic rationale Drum Calls is an auto-ethnographic movie that innovates through a modular storyboard uniting music, poetry, display typography, and dance. It is informed by over a decade of social dance (dancehall, blues, African) participation by myself, the director. Furthermore, thanks to an EU-funded MANIFEST honorarium, my dance partner Aurélie trained with me weekly for over a year, a practice essential to filming within a tight production window and budget (only one fully funded day).  The modular storyboard of Drum Calls allows re-use of scenes in the Unity Atlantic Rhythm Map, contextualised with texts to offer an educational resource of choreographic and musical data. These are some artistic praxes of creating Drum Calls and the Unity Map : I wrote and scored, directed and choreographed, designed, danced and sang, edited, co-produced and continue to promote for Drum Calls. Dance, image, music research: Deirdre Molloy in partial completion of doctoral thesis at University College Cork & University of Toulouse Thanks to the WHH Foundation and the Danijela Kulezic-Wilson Memorial Award and the MANIFEST consortium.   Selected Screenings: Manifest at L'Atelier 2024 sept 19 - oct 10 NantesFranceSeptember 19, 2024French PremièreFinalist in EU-funded Manifest Art Award   Africlap ToulouseFranceNovember 14, 2024Official selection   Queens Black History Underground Film Festival South Carolina State Museum, Columbia, SC 290201United StatesOctober 11, 2025North American PremiereOfficial selection
