Each One for Themselves in Cities, But Everybody for Everybody in Rural Areas: Factors That Influence Attitudes Toward Cooperatives in Ghana

This article analyses the factors that shape individuals' attitudes toward cooperatives in Ghana. It utilises nationwide survey data and situates the analysis within structural and interpretive perspectives, exploring the situational dimension of attitude attribution by connecting attitudes to social milieu and the dispositional dimension, which associates attitudes with personal characteristics. The probit regression analysis presented in this article shows that positive attitude towards cooperatives is a function of age, geographical location, industrial sector of employment, knowledge about cooperatives and belief in the relevance of these organisations. The analysis also reveals a dearth of statistically significant relationships between positive attitudes towards cooperatives and interactions among dispositional factors, as well as the interplay between dispositional factors and situational factors. This article maintains that situational and dispositional factors independently influence positive attitudes toward cooperatives in Ghana, rather than the interactions of the two domains.
