Lighting is one of the most critical architectural elements influencing the functionality, energy performance, conservation quality and visitor experience of museum buildings. Despite the rising demand for sustainable public buildings in Nigeria, many museums continue to rely on conventional artificial lighting that consumes significant electricity while delivering inconsistent visual comfort and inadequate artefact protection. This study evaluated effective lighting design strategies for enhancing energy efficiency in the design of a museum in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria. Specifically, it identified the lighting design strategies known to architects involved in museum design, examined the extent of their integration into museum projects, investigated the barriers limiting their application, and identified the determinants influencing their adoption. A quantitative approach supported by direct field observation was adopted. Structured questionnaires were administered to registered architects, while observational assessments were conducted on selected case-study museums. Data from 210 valid responses were analysed in SPSS version 27 using frequencies, percentages, mean scores, standard deviations and ranking. LED lighting systems (Mean = 4.42), daylight-responsive controls (Mean = 4.35), skylight integration (Mean = 4.27), external shading devices (Mean = 4.19) and high-performance glazing (Mean = 4.11) were the most recognised strategies. Budget limitations, inadequate technical expertise, poor maintenance culture, unstable electricity supply and the absence of lighting standards were the major implementation barriers, while climatic responsiveness, client awareness, professional competence, government regulation and technology availability were the leading determinants of adoption. A consistent gap between awareness and application was observed, widest for advanced automated technologies. The study concludes that integrating passive daylighting with intelligent artificial lighting offers the most effective pathway to energy-efficient museum buildings in tropical climates, and recommends stronger professional training, policy implementation, client awareness and the incorporation of energy-efficient lighting principles into museum design guidelines for Nigeria.
