Waste disposal in Monrovia, Liberia, is a big, often brushed-off problem that hardens urban life and public health. I set out to dig into this issue, looking at practical ways to manage waste that mix community fixes with better public services, aiming to make cities more livable and keep people healthier. I chatted with a range of locals while also crunching numbers on waste production and urban conditions; this odd mix of interviews and hard data painted an uneven picture of how things really are. It seems current practices fall short quite badly, mainly because the basic infrastructure isn't there, and many folks just aren't aware of the risks, fueling health problems and stalling city growth. In most cases, the answer lies in tying together community involvement, upgraded services, and a firmer hand on policy enforcement.
