After a review of the history of the English language in Egypt, the forms and functions for English use in contemporary Egypt is examined. While enrollment in English courses continues to grow quickly, and Egyptian English continues to gain ground among members of several professions, English will remain for the most part in what Kachru (1992) calls the ‘Expanding Circle’ of English for the majority of Egyptians. Notable exceptions include university communities, those involved in the large tourist industry, and professionals in Engineering, Business, and Medicine.
