Abstract
Entrepreneurship education has become an important strategy for addressing youth unemployment and promoting economic independence among students. In many developing countries, particularly Nigeria, traditional education systems have been criticized for focusing mainly on theoretical knowledge while neglecting practical skills necessary for economic productivity. This paper examines the role of entrepreneurship education in promoting economic self-reliance among students. Using a conceptual and analytical approach, the study explores the theoretical foundations of entrepreneurship education, the concept of economic self-reliance, and the mechanisms through which entrepreneurial learning empowers students to create economic opportunities. The paper also reviews existing literature on entrepreneurship education and highlights major challenges affecting its implementation in tertiary institutions. The study further proposes strategies for strengthening entrepreneurship education through experiential learning, industry collaboration, and supportive government policies. The paper concludes that entrepreneurship education is a critical driver of youth empowerment, innovation, and sustainable economic development. Strengthening entrepreneurship education programs can significantly enhance students’ capacity for self-employment and contribute to national economic growth.
