Estimating Heterogeneous Treatment Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Antisocial Behavior: A Secondary Analysis of the Sustainable Transformation of Youth in Liberia Program

The aim of this study is to investigate heterogeneous treatment effects (HTE) of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on antisocial behavior in a sample of 999 criminally engaged Liberian men. We will use secondary data from a randomized controlled trial “Sustainable Transformation of Youth in Liberia” (STYL). The original trial included four arms: 1) control group (no intervention); 2) therapy-only group, eight weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy; 3) cash-only group, randomized to receive a cash grant of 200 dollars; and 4) a group that were given both cash and therapy. The primary objective of the present study is to use an ensemble machine learning technique, Causal Forests, to investigate whether there is heterogeneity in CBT program’s treatment effects. Specifically, we will focus on investigating effects in the combined treatment arm (therapy + cash grant vs. control). Second, we aim to identify which individual characteristics explain the potential heterogeneity within this treatment arm.
