Ethics and Governance in AI: Perspectives from Senegal's African Context

AI ethics in governance is a critical area of study for African societies, particularly given the continent's unique socio-economic landscape and technological advancements. A qualitative approach was employed through interviews with policymakers, technologists, and civil society representatives in Senegal. Senegalese stakeholders identified a significant need for robust data protection laws that align with international standards to prevent misuse of personal information by AI systems. The findings highlight the importance of developing tailored governance models that integrate cultural values and local contexts, especially regarding privacy and transparency in AI applications. Senegal should establish a dedicated National Ethics Committee for AI to oversee all aspects of AI development and deployment, ensuring compliance with ethical guidelines.
