Evaluating the Economic Outcomes of Fifth-Generation (5G) Technology Deployment in Nigeria

The rollout of fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology marks a pivotal advancement in global telecommunications, with the potential to drive economic transformation in Nigeria. However, adoption is influenced by infrastructural, regulatory, and socioeconomic factors that require empirical assessment. This study employed a quantitative research design, utilizing secondary data from the Nigerian Communications Commission, National Bureau of Statistics, and other credible sources. The dataset spanned Q1 2022 to Q4 2024, with projections to mid-2027 generated through linear regression analysis. Variables examined included GDP contribution, accessibility, affordability, and infrastructural and regulatory challenges. Findings indicate an increase in the telecommunications sector’s GDP contribution from 12.94% in Q1 2022 to 14.40% in Q4 2024, with a peak of 16% in Q2 2023. Forecasts project a rise to approximately 18.2% by mid-2027. Urban areas experienced faster deployment, while rural regions faced limited accessibility due to infrastructural deficits and affordability constraints. The economic gains from 5G deployment are evident, yet persistent challenges such as inadequate network coverage, unstable electricity supply, high deployment costs, and complex regulatory processes pose risks to equitable adoption. Addressing these barriers is critical to ensuring that 5G serves as a catalyst for inclusive growth. Strategic infrastructure investment, regulatory reform, and targeted affordability measures are essential to harnessing the full socioeconomic potential of 5G technology in Nigeria.
