Evaluating the Impact of Emerging Technologies on the Digital Transformation of Education in Nigeria

This paper investigate how the digital transformation of education in Nigeria is being Fuelled by emerging technologies, namely Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR), Blockchain, Big Data and Learning Analytics. The 33 publications were systematically reviewed between 2021 and 2025 with particular interest in the research articles that assessed the impact of these six technologies on the Nigerian education environment. The researchers included only peer reviewed articles with relevance in Nigeria and with direct application of one or more technologies in education setup. The results show that artificial intelligence (AI) and Learning Analytics represent the most promising technologies, as they provide adaptable learning opportunities and evidence-based guidance that can create a significant positive impact on learners and academic performance. IoT and VR/AR have also been used to support the smart classroom practise-based educational process, credentialling and record-keeping is provided by Blockchain. The study also reveal inadequate infrastructure, absence of digital skills, and data protection issues. As it has been indicated in this research paper, there is the need to put in place certain policies and invest in various infrastructures towards full exploitation of these technologies including educational equity. The research paper will help clarify the way digital technologies can assist to accelerate the process of education transformation in Nigeria and offer pragmatic suggestions to the stakeholders.
