This study examines the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on modern academic research, with a focus on Nigerian institutions and comparative insights from international contexts. The study employed a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to examine the extent of AI integration, perceived benefits, challenges, ethical concerns, and institutional preparedness. A purposive sample of 200 participants—comprising 150 from Nigerian universities and 50 from international institutions—was selected. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including Pearson correlation and independent t-tests, while qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis. Findings revealed a significant positive relationship between AI integration and research productivity. However, Nigerian institutions lag behind international counterparts in AI adoption due to infrastructural deficits, low awareness, and lack of clear ethical frameworks. High levels of awareness and low infrastructural challenges were associated with greater AI adoption, while ethical concerns significantly reduced willingness to use AI tools. Qualitative findings highlighted benefits such as improved efficiency and writing quality, alongside concerns around plagiarism, data privacy, and critical thinking erosion. The study concludes that while AI holds transformative potential for academic research in Nigeria, systemic barriers must be addressed. It recommends targeted investment in infrastructure, AI literacy training, and development of institutional policies to promote ethical and effective use of AI in research.
