Background
Critical care nurses experience high levels of occupational stress, which can affect their psychological well‐being and patient care. Emotional intelligence (EI) and resilience are essential psychological resources that help nurses manage stress effectively; however, evidence regarding the role of EI in the relationship between stress and resilience remains limited.
Aim
This study examined the relationships among workplace stress, anxiety, EI, and resilience and explored the role of EI in the association between stress and resilience among critical care nurses in Oman.
Methods
A descriptive cross‐sectional design was used, involving nurses from two major hospitals in Oman. Data were collected using validated scales: the Emotional Intelligence Scale, the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Job Stress Scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted.
Results
Participants reported moderate levels of EI, resilience, stress, and anxiety. EI was a strong positive predictor of resilience (

< 0.001), and the 31–39 age group was also associated with higher resilience (

= 0.04). Mediation analysis indicated that EI statistically mediated the association between stress and resilience, explaining 57% of the variance in resilience.
Conclusion
EI statistically mediated the association between stress and resilience among critical care nurses. Incorporating EI training into nursing education and professional development may be a promising strategy to support resilience and stress management among nurses.
Relevance to Clinical Practice
Healthcare organizations should integrate EI training, mindfulness, and simulation‐based interventions and foster supportive work environments to enhance nurses’ resilience and reduce workplace stress.
