This systematic review analyzes the genetic, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms underlying bruchid (Acanthoscelides obtectus and Zabrotes subfasciatus) resistance in African Phaseolus vulgaris. It synthesizes evidence from QTL mapping, GWAS, proteomics, and inheritance studies to identify key loci (APA on Pv04, QTLs on Pv03 and Pv07), resistance proteins (arcelins, phytohemagglutinin, α-amylase inhibitors), and seed coat traits linked to antibiosis and antixenosis.
The review also evaluates molecular markers (SCAR, SSR, SNP) for breeding applications and proposes a genomic-informed breeding framework integrating multi-omics and participatory validation. Expected outcomes include a mapped summary of known resistance mechanisms, marker-trait associations, and priority research gaps guiding marker-assisted breeding for climate-resilient, bruchid-resistant cultivars in Africa.
