1.1 Purpose of This Document
This document defines the vision, objectives, scope, and boundaries of the Tap-In platform. It serves as the single source of truth for stakeholders, developers, and investors, guiding what will be built (and, importantly, what will not be built) in each phase.
1.2 The Problem
South Africa's minibus taxi industry moves millions of commuters daily and generates billions of rand annually — yet it remains almost entirely cash-based and unrecorded. This creates three chronic problems:
The Trust Gap: Owners cannot verify what drivers collect. Under-declared cash takings ("short-faring") is the industry's biggest source of conflict and lost income.
The Commuter Experience: No records, no receipts, no loyalty benefits, no safety accountability — commuters are invisible.
No Data: Owners, associations, and drivers make decisions with zero trip, revenue, or route data.
1.3 Adoption Reality (Core Design Philosophy)
Commuters just want to climb in and pay cash. Any solution that slows boarding down by more than a few seconds will be rejected.
Therefore, Tap-In is built around a driver-assisted adoption model:
The driver is the primary user at launch, not the commuter.
Commuters do not need the app to participate. They board, ride, and pay exactly as they do today.
The driver taps each commuter in/out on his device — 2–3 taps per commuter.
The commuter's smartphone app is optional and unlocks self-service tap-in, trip history, and rewards once the habit exists.
