Built with Excel and Power Query. # Mining Safety Analytics - ESG Portfolio ## Executive Summary This portfolio analyzes 5,001 workforce safety incidents recorded across formal and artisanal mining operations in Sub-Saharan Africa between January 2020 and December 2024. The analysis addresses the Social (S) pillar of ESG through seven targeted business questions, revealing patterns in workforce vulnerability, contractor equity, fatal task exposure, and operational risk. **Three headline findings emerged:** 1. **The 30-39 age group bears the highest absolute burden of fatalities.** Meanwhile, workers under 20 have the lowest experience levels. Experience saves lives: as average experience rises with age, total fatalities decline sharply. 2. **Contractors die at higher rates.** Across every mine type, when a contractor is injured, the outcome is more likely to be fatal than for a direct operator. The widest gap is in Formal Large mines, where contractor fatality density reaches 79.4% versus 61.7% for operators. 3. **The data has a blind spot.** The "Other" category dominates fatality counts across tasks, injury mechanisms, and mine types — a recurring signal that the incident classification system itself is masking root causes. **Additional insights** include a mid-shift danger zone (hours 4-8, not overtime), a 40% PPE non-compliance rate during life-altering injuries, and a clear divergence between Artisanal mines (where the ground kills) and Formal Large mines (where machines kill). All analysis was conducted in Microsoft Excel using Power Query for data transformation, pivot tables for aggregation, and interactive slicers for dynamic filtering.
